Indonesia’s government energy holding company Pertamina and PT Trans PacificPetrochemical Indotama (TPPI) recently started exporting paraxylene, a petrochemical product, to China with an initial consignment of 10,000 tonnes. The export fructified following an increase in the production capacity of the TPPI refinery to 70 tonnes per hour.

The production now will be 50,000 tonnes per month, a news agency report quoted TPPI general manager Sugeng Hermanto as saying.

TPPI is a subsidiary of PT Tuban Petrochemical Industries, of which Pertamina controls 41 per cent.

Paraxylene is the main raw material used in producing purified terephthalic acid, an important component in the textile industry.

Paraxylene is also processed into polyethylene terephthalate, the main material used in producing food grade plastic packaging.
