Coonoor river will be fenced to stop pollution: Collector


Udhagamandalam: The Coonoor river would soon be fenced and CCTV cameras installed to monitor the area to prevent dumping of waste into it, collector J Innocent Divya said. She warned miscreants of a heavy fine if they indulge in such activities.

The collector, who inaugurated a cleaning campaign at Coonoor bus stand on Wednesday, said encroachments of pavements and roads would be viewed very seriously and offenders would be punished. Every shopkeeper should place a bin at the entrance of the shop, she added.

Later in the day, the collector presided over Jamabandhi meeting at Coonoor taluk office and received grievances from the public. She received as many as 230 petitions seeking bus service, old age pension, drinking water facility and road facilities. She ordered the concerned officials to take immediate action on the petitions. She also distributed benefits of government welfare schemes to be selected people.

Govindarajan, a resident of Coonoor, said, “People who comes to Coonoor steps first into Coonoor bus stand. But it is always untidy. The Coonoor river is exposed to litters as it is located close to the bus stand.”
