Italy ranks second in Europe after France in beachwear sales, with an annual turnover of €733 million, according to Marco Borioli, president of Maredimoda, an annual trade fair for beachwear, underwear and athleisure in Cannes. Two-fifths of the market there is covered by chain stores while independent stores have a share of less than 20 per cent, he said.Inside the five benchmark European markets — Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom, about 15 per cent of over-14 women buy at least one bathing suit every year for leisure, Borioli said in an interview with Fibre2Fashion. Within this segment, the two-piece swimsuit , or bikini, comprises 70 per cent of the European turnover, he said.
The biggest share — 63 per cent — of swimsuits in Italy is for leisure, i.e., sunbathing and beach life, which prevails over sports activities, he said.
